A powerful geomagnetic storm is forecast to create a rare opportunity for folks across Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota to witness the stunning Northern Lights.

Be looking for the Aurora Borealis this weekend...Oct. 4th & 5th.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (NOAA) has issued a G1-G3 (Minor-Strong) geomagnetic storm watch, extending the typical aurora viewing range far south of its usual limits.

Residents in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and other portions of the northern U.S. may have the chance to observe Mother Nature's magnificent light show.

The best viewing conditions are expected between 10 PM and 2 AM with optimal visibility in areas away from city lights.

This enhanced aurora activity results from a recent coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun, sending charged particles toward Earth's magnetic field.

While these storms can potentially impact power grids and satellite communications, they also create breathtaking night sky displays.

For the best viewing experience, experts recommend:

  • Finding a dark location away from urban light pollution
  • Allowing eyes to adjust to darkness for 20-30 minutes
  • Looking toward the northern horizon
  • Checking local weather forecasts for cloud coverage
