Traveling Soon? Cities Near South Dakota Just Made the Bed Bug List
Have you ever had to deal with bed bugs? Thankfully, I haven't ever had to...yet. That's good because I always seem to forget about the possibility of bed bugs until I've already settled into a hotel bed.
Bed bugs just seem like such a huge hassle. Not only will they munch on you while you sleep, but they also get into everything. Then you end up spreading them wherever you go. It sounds like a pain to wash all your clothes and bedding, vacuum, and clean the mattress and furniture. I'd happily soak everything in bleach and burn the rest. I offer no quarter in our battle against bugs.

But luckily, I’m not called on to travel much nowadays. If you spend time in hotels a lot, do you worry about bed bugs?
Bed bugs are super small insects that have been feeding on humans for thousands of years. They love to hide in dark places like your bed and wait for you to climb in so they can get their Dracula on and drink our blood. Their feeding leaves our skin itching with flat or raised reddish lesions. Worse, the irritations may not show up right away, meaning you could have cross-infected your stuff before you know you're a carrier.
How to Spot Bed Bugs
According to professional pest controllers, Orkin, if you want to be on the lookout for bed bugs, keep an eye out for:
- Small, itchy bites in a line or cluster on your skin
- Rust-colored stains or smears on sheets and mattresses
- Clusters of dark brown or black spots from dried excrement
- Shed skins or casings left behind after molting
- A subtle, sweet, and musty odor, particularly in heavily infested areas
Orkin adds that bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed and can often be found inside mattress seams, behind wallpaper, in cracks in wooden furniture, and inside dresser drawers.
Other places to check include box springs, headboards and bed frames, upholstered furniture, and behind wall outlets and baseboards.

South Dakota isn't immune; bed bugs are everywhere, and they can spread fast. Thankfully, according to Orkin, there aren't any South Dakota cities on its 2025 Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List. But we aren't living on an island; places just a couple of hours away are on the list.
