This sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but it's really happening right now miles under our feet. There's a project where a mountain in South Dakota is being hollowed out with the hope that it will soon be a part of experiments involving a beam that will be directed toward that facility

Have you heard about the Sanford Underground Research Facility? It's a huge project located in Lead, South Dakota. There is a very real connection to Illinois in this space.

The Sanford Underground Research Facility is in the process of digging a huge tunnel thousands of feet below the Earth where experiments will be done. A new video just shared days ago shows the progress that's being made.

Why are they shooting a beam at Fermilab in Illinois?

One of the team members at Sanford was kind enough to give me some backstory about why these two facilities are working together:

"The effort to understand neutrinos in the  Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE)  can help answer some fundamental questions about our universe" - Mike Ray, Sanford Underground Research Facility

You can find out more about this interesting project through the Dune Science site.
