This tourist destination has made the list of one of the drunkest cities in Minnesota before, but this time it takes the title of the drunkest city in the entire state.

What were the criteria used for the list?

24/7 Tempo compiled data to come up with a list of the drunkest places in every state. They reviewed the percentage of men and women over the age of 18 who drank in metropolitan areas. They took in accounts for those who reported heavy or binge drinking. Following that, they signed out the city or metropolitan area with the highest rate.

Where did the data come from?

The data came from a joint program from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute called "2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps."

What is defined as binge drinking or heavy drinking?

According to health experts, women should only drink 1 alcoholic drink per day and men should only drink 2 per day. Binge drinking is defined by drinking five or more drinks on one occasion for men, or four or more for women.

Duluth, Minnesota is the drunkest area in Minnesota - but that includes Superior, Wisconsin too.

I have to argue that this data is skewed for the report. I'll get to that in a minute, but here's what their numbers say:

> Drunkest metro area: Duluth
> Adults who drink excessively: 24.2% (Statewide: 21.5% – 8th highest)
> Countywide driving deaths involving alcohol: 38.2% (Statewide: 29.9% – 22nd highest)
> Duluth population: 291,931

Wait, Duluth doesn't have 291,931 people?

Duluth's population is actually only 86,372 people. But the study goes by the metro area, which would include surrounding cities such as Superior, Wisconsin. The study doesn't specify exactly what cities were included.

St. Louis County is Minnesota's Largest County.

Another factor they use for this study is the countywide driving deaths involving alcohol. It's not a surprise that the largest county would have more accidents, especially if you consider the amount of the county that is rural North of Duluth.
