Iowa’s Most Famous Sandwich Shop Opened New Year’s Day 1928
It was on New Year's Day, 1928 when the most famous and enduring sandwich shop in the Hawkeye State's history opened its doors for the very first time.
It's a simple sandwich to make, but nearly impossible to perfect. But this small shop, found in the center of the state, has been doing just that for nearly 100 years now.
Welcome to Taylor's Made-Rite of Marshalltown, Iowa
According to the Notes on Iowa Website, Taylor's Made-Rite first opened on New Year's Day, 1928.
And while it's not the first Taylor's Made-Rite in the state (That title goes to Taylor's Made-Rite of Muscatine, Iowa), it's undoubtedly the most famous.

With the success of the first Maid-Rite, franchises soon followed. After paying a fee of $300, Cliff Taylor brought Maid-Rite to Marshalltown. Sourcing pickles from the Marshall Vinegar Works and buns from the Marshalltown Strand’s Bakery, Taylor’s business soon took off. The Taylor’s also added their own homemade pies to the menu which featured hamburger ground fresh daily.
