A twenty-something man was rescued from Black Hawk Peak, formally known at Harney Peak, Friday after veering off the main trail. Hikers heard calls for help and tracked the location of the injured man to the base of a tall rock formation about 2/3 of the way to the top.

After alerting authorities it was determined that because of the harsh terrain and surroundings it was too difficult to carry him out by foot. Despite the windy conditions a South Dakota National Guard helicopter was able to airlift the victim out. He is receiving treatment at a nearby Rapid City hospital.

Having hiked to the summit before, there are several off-shoot trails that are unmarked experienced hikes can trek. The last time we ventured to the top we spotted several people climbing or standing atop the steep rock formations.

To prevent accidents ascending South Dakota's highest peak, make sure you know the terrain and don't get too close to the edge of rock outcroppings. Stay on the main trail and follow the signs. Bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need) especially if your bringing younger hikers with you.

Most importantly, if you are experienced and prefer to hike alone, let your family and friends know where you're hiking and what time you should arrive home.

The pics I used were from 2016 when I hiked to the top with my sons.
