South Dakotans are being asked to consider soil and water conservation the week of April 28th as part of a stewardship event declared by South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard.

The theme for the week is 'Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil.' It draws attention to the fungi, protozoa, earthworms, bacteria and other microorganisms in the earth.
Bill Smith says those elements support life as we know it. Smith is a program administrator with the state's Department of Agriculture.

In his proclamation establishing the event, Daugaard says few understand soil and most take it for granted.
A mobile app called 'soilweb' can teach curious stewards about the soil in their area. The campaign is part of an effort by the National Association of Conservation Districts.
