A new survey from Yelp uncovered some of the best doughnut shops in the country, especially in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota.

From iced, glazed, or filled doughnut treats, the experts at Yelp determined the Best Donut Shop in Every State by searching for local reviews and ratings of doughnut eateries.

This is an all-time list of the best donut shops in every state, according to Yelp Elites. We identified businesses in the donuts category on Yelp, with a large concentration of 5-star Elite reviews. This list looked at businesses in the United States. All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of March 28, 2024

So where are the best doughnut shops in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota? Let's go on a sweet journey!

Minnesota: Heights Bakery in Columbia Heights

This "quaint little shop" is a family-owned business located about 20 minutes north of Minneapolis. Some local favorites include glazed, chocolate-dipped, to apple fritters and flaky cronuts. 

Iowa: Ambrosia Donuts in Ankeny

The Des Moines area residents love this old-school doughnut establishment. You can tell they spend time creating each doughnut every day. Here's a glowing review from Yelp:

South Dakota: Jerry’s Cakes & Donuts in Rapid City

This could be controversial for South Dakota residents. This is a great local doughnut shop out west. There's even a "secret family recipe" that owners of Jerry’s Cakes & Donuts have used for more than four decades. Besides doughnuts, this shop also features baked goodies like muffins, cookies, brownies, and birthday cakes. 

Some South Dakotans can argue that the best doughnut shop in the state is The Royal Bake Shop in Centerville.
