Crazy Horse Memorial to Host Code Talker Medal Exhibit
CUSTER, S.D. (AP) — Bronze replicas of the Congressional Gold Medals honoring the service of American Indians who used their native language to outwit the enemy during World Wars I and II will be displayed at Crazy Horse Memorial this Veterans Day.
The memorial will be the last stop of the touring "Oceti Sakowin Code Talker Congressional Medallion" exhibit, which also includes a display of tribal flags.
Major General Tim Reisch, the adjutant general of the South Dakota National Guard, will be the featured speaker during a ceremony that will highlight the service of code talkers and their families from local tribes.
Code talkers used their native language as a means of secret communication during wartime.
Various South Dakota cities hosted the exhibit in October in observance of Native American Heritage Month.
