Bullseye! South Dakota Governor’s Costume Is The Ultimate Cowgirl
Halloween night was full of tricks and treats in the Sioux Empire Thursday. Despite the chilly weather, kids and kids at heart in South Dakota dressed up for this spooky season.
Halloween costumes like witches, vampires, and clowns haunted the streets across the state. Even South Dakota's First Family got into the Halloween spirit. From the looks of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem's Instagram and Facebook accounts, she decided to really put on a show-stopping performance!
South Dakota Governor Noem once again welcomed trick-or-treaters to the Governor's Residence for delicious Halloween candy. No tricks. Like South Dakota Governors before her, Governor Noem and her family dressed up for the occasion. But before she passed out candy to the trick-or-treaters at the Governor's Residence, Governor Noem revealed her costume for the evening. Think of a famous cowgirl of the Wild West...
Just for the day "Annie Oakley" was taking over the Governor's mansion! Annie Oakley was known to be an amazing horseback rider and sharpshooter as part of Buffalo Bill Cody's "Wild West Show."
Some might say the Governor's costume choice is a direct hit. Others could say it's a miss. However, after doing some research, Annie Oakley does have some South Dakota connections. While she was on the road with Buffalo Bill Cody and the "Wild West Show," she did meet Wild Bill Hickok (played by First Gentleman Bryon Noem) and Lakota Sioux leader Sitting Bull. According to the History Channel, Sitting Bull considered Annie to be like "an adopted daughter." The nickname Sitting Bull gave Annie was "Watanya Cicilla," or "Little Sure Shot." This ended up being her iconic nickname.
It's always an entertaining tradition to see how the Governors and their families in South Dakota celebrate Halloween! Last Halloween, Governor Noem and her family dressed as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam! Governor Noem also dressed as country singer Lainey Wilson while she was working in the office.
Parents, don't forget to enjoy some candy! You deserve a treat too!
