Local South Dakota Dairy Queen Raising Funds to Honor Special Kid
If you're thinking of getting a sweet treat for the family this week, consider traveling to Brandon, South Dakota, to visit Dairy Queen for a special fundraiser.
Lori Huml and her family are the definition of South Dakota strong. Their strength shines bright thanks to Lori's son, Spencer Thorsland.

For over three years, Lori’s son Spencer was battling cancer. During the annual Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon, we were fortunate to have met Spencer and hear about his cancer journey. Spencer was bright, funny, and always kind to everyone he met. His smile lit up a room. Despite his cancer diagnosis, his spirit was never broken.
Spencer did earn his angel wings on January 8th of 2024 when he was 13-years-old. Even though his time on earth was short, Spencer made a huge impact on the Sioux Empire. Thanks to his family and their community, Spencer’s force is strong with the new “This Is The Way Foundation.” Part of this organization is a special scholarship for future medical professionals in honor of Spencer’s dream to become a surgeon. It's the "Eventually Scholarship." The word "eventually" was a huge part of Spencer's fight.
Located at 201 South Splitrock in Brandon, South Dakota, the local Dairy Queen Grill & Chill will be supporting the This Is The Way Foundation with a fundraiser on Thursday, October 23rd. From 5 PM until 8 PM, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill will donate 10% of all sales to This Is The Way Foundation.
I had the pleasure last week to sit down with Lori and one of her volunteers from the This Is The Way Foundation, Jody Earley, to talk about the organization on Sunday Focus. Please take the time to listen to this amazing organization in honor of Spencer!
Let's fill the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Brandon this Thursday!
