YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Yankton is hosting bicycle-friendly activities throughout June in an effort to promote healthy and environmentally conscious lifestyles.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan reports the city has proclaimed June as "Bike to Work Bike to Play Month."

A 10-mile community ride that will highlight some of Yankton's parks and historic landmarks and a children's duathlon are among the events the city will be hosting in the upcoming weeks.

Organizers of the biking effort are encouraging participants to snap photos of bikers with unique or serene backgrounds from their excursions.

Sarah Mannes Homstad with Bike Yankton says the photos will "start highlighting Yankton as a cycling city."

The city is also encouraging residents to bike to other scheduled events, including a series of free concerts that feature local bands every Tuesday.
