The Possum.

If you're a country music fan (and I'm thinking you are), that's all that needs to be said.

George Jones is arguably the most legendary name in the history of the music we love. In a career that spanned decades, from the 1950's until his death in 2013, George Jones was the definition of country music to millions. If you asked 100 people who the greatest artist was in country music history, the majority would name George. If you asked the same 100 what the greatest song in country music history is, an overwhelming majority would tell you He Stopped Loving Her Today.

So here's the question: What was this legend's first number one hit? And conversely, what was his last?

Well, following several Top Ten hits, the Possum first topped the chart in 1959 with 'White Lightning'. And thus, the amazing career that would move into legendary status was underway. Through the 1960's, 70's and 80's George's songs were on the charts...and his life was in the news (but that's a story for another day).

And while George had hits right up into the 2000's, his final number one hit came in 1983 with 'I Always get Lucky With You'. His follow-up, the great 'Tennessee Whiskey' topped out at #2.

So that was George's last number one...maybe. Like many artist's, there's probably a bunch of 'unreleased' Jones songs, along with re-issue's and, who knows, maybe a Possum classic will pop up in a movie (or commercial!) and zoom back up the charts.

George may be gone, but his music never will be.
