A few weeks ago, President Barack Obama stepped in the conversation revolving the Washington Redskins team name, and gave his opinion on how he would handle the situation.

“If I were the owner of the team, and I knew that there was a name of my team – even if it had storied history – that was offending a sizeable group of people, I’d think about changing it.”

Ray Halbritter of the Oneida Indian Nation, launched the “Change the Mascot,” campaign, in an attempt to change the Redskins name.

Team owner Dan Snyder has since said the name stands for, “strength, courage, pride, and respect.”

Since the topic has been discussed heavily, a San Francisco design company, 99designs, created a Web-based design to make a new a logo for the team. The contest has drawn some unique, and odd names for the team.

A few names include:

  • Washington Warriors – this drawing has the Pentagon to honor the U.S. military and the Washington monument. This name won a Twitter contest in January, and the contest held at 99designs.
  • Washington Redtails – honors the Tuskegee Airmen. The Airmen were African-American pilots recognized for battling racial prejudice in World War II. This name came in second.
  • Griffins – this name isn’t based off quarterback Robert Griffin III, either. The mascot would feature the head of an eagle and the body of a lion.
  • Renegades
  • Senators
  • Americans
  • Generals
  • Hogs
  • Pigskins
  • Redhawks
Fans can see the possible designs at 99designs.
