PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Board of Education says almost 780 high school students have enrolled in the state's reduced-cost dual credit program to earn credit at public universities and technical schools.

The board heard a report Monday that shows the juniors and seniors are on track to earn more than 4,000 dual credits. The 2014 Legislature approved funding to make certain dual credit courses available at the cost of $40 per credit hour for juniors and seniors.

High school students in the program can simultaneously earn credits for their high school diploma and postsecondary degree or certificate.

The state education secretary calls the enrollment numbers "very exciting" and says the program is a great way for students to get a jump start on higher education.
