SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — City Council members in Sioux Falls are looking at changing rules that ride-hailing service Uber says could prevent it from launching in the city.

The Argus Leader reports a Sioux Falls committee will work to come up with new rules that are specific to ride-hailing companies. Assistant City Attorney Keith Allenstein has said such services would have to follow existing rules governing independent contractors and taxi drivers.

Uber says it has recruited drivers in Sioux Falls. But spokeswoman Jaime Moore told the newspaper last week that rules similar to those currently on the books in Sioux Falls have prevented Uber from expanding to other markets.

Council member Dean Karsky said at an informational meeting Tuesday that the city shouldn't apply existing ordinances and should be "open to what's happening in the marketplace."
