Senator Barry Goldwater Is The Republican Nominee For President In 1964

The 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco featured 2 prominent candidates for the Presidential nomination.

There was the more 'liberal', Nelson Rockefeller from New York, and the more 'conservative' Barry Goldwater from Arizona.

In fact, Barry Goldwater was called 'Mr. Conservative' and was proud of the title.  And he received the nomination.

At the time of the convention it was known, of course, but Goldwater would go on the a resounding defeat in the General Election to President Lyndon Johnson.

But many conservative Republicans today (and through the years) point to Goldwater as the beginning of true conservative politics.
