SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Broken sanitation equipment and a baby delivered unattended in a bathroom are among the dozens of serious deficiencies that federal inspectors found during unannounced visits to two hospitals in South Dakota that provide care to Native Americans.

The Associated Press obtained records of the inspections conducted by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare in October and November at the federally administered hospitals on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations.

Oglala Sioux Tribe president John Yellow Bird Steele says many tribal members living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are ill, but the local hospital administered by the Indian Health Service does not have the capability of helping them.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it is working to fix the deficiencies.
