Officials Consider Restarting South Dakota Homeless Council

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota officials are considering reviving a state council that focused on coordinating services for the homeless.

The Interagency Council on Homelessness was created by Governor Mike Rounds in 2003, but it went dormant after a handful of meetings. South Dakota Housing Authority executive director Mark Lauseng says serious talks about restarting the council began a few months ago.

The Argus Leader reports a lack of communication and coordination has been a main problem South Dakota agencies face in helping the homeless. Lauseng says state agencies don't always know about projects being done by others.

Officials aren't sure how the council would be structured. The previous council included the governor, cabinet secretaries from certain state departments and other officials.
