MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Residents of Mitchell have approved an $8 million indoor pool.

The Daily Republic reports that 54 percent of the 2,653 people who cast absentee ballots or voted in Tuesday's special election were in favor of the proposed aquatics facility.

The 22,000-square foot facility will have a competition-size lap pool and a 1,200-square-foot leisure pool. It will be funded through various methods including surplus and reserve city funds and a hotel tax increase.

People who wanted the public to weigh in on the project circulated petitions earlier this year to bring the matter to a vote.
