Former US Senate Candidate in South Dakota Going on Trial

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Former South Dakota U.S. Senate candidate Clayton Walker is going on trial for alleged election law violations.

KCCR radio reports jury selection is Monday at the Hughes County Courthouse in Pierre.

The 33-year-old Walker faces felony charges for submitting nominating petitions that investigators allege included names of dead people, fictitious people and Hollywood celebrities. He also was indicted for failing to appear at an earlier court hearing in the case.

Walker also is charged with threatening by electronic device, for allegedly making repeated phone calls to state offices.

Walker ran as an independent last year but failed to make the November ballot. Former Republican candidate Annette Bosworth faced similar charges and was convicted in May of perjury and filing false documents, but she was given probation rather than prison time.
