Disorderly Calls Jump in 3 Months since Bishop Dudley Hospitality House Opened in Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sioux Falls police say the number of calls for drunk and disorderly conduct have increased dramatically since an emergency shelter and day center opened in the city's Whittier neighborhood three months ago.
Police say the number of calls for disorderly subjects almost tripled from the same time a year ago while calls for intoxicated people increased more than 2½ times from 2014.
In spite of the figures, police spokesman Sam Clemens says it's too soon to "conclusively say" there are more problems because of the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House.
The director of the shelter tells the Sioux Falls Argus Leader hat only a small percentage of the homeless who stay overnight at the facility have required police intervention.
