You Should Check Your Name For Unclaimed Property. I’m Getting a Check From the State!
Last Wednesday as I was starting my stay-at-home-dad vacation, I saw a story on KSFY about unclaimed property that the South Dakota State Treasurer is just sitting on.
It's money or property that someone was trying to send to the rightful owners but couldn't locate them so it ends up with the state.
I had heard of this before but I always assumed it was something that happened to rich people who have so much money and property and deals going on that just couldn't keep track of it all.
At the end of the story they gave the website, sdtreasurer.gov, and I wasn't going to bother. I was on my laptop doing some work and stopped. "What the hell?" I thought. I see if my name is in there.
It was! Along with my old address on Sycamore Avenue before I got married.
I did not find a fortune, but I did find that I had $17.75 waiting for me from something called "Cellco Partnership." I Googled it and found out it was actually from Verizon.
I'm guessing, but what probably happened was after I combined my phone with my wife's on one account, having already paid my most recent bill, I had overpaid by $17.75. They tried to send the refund for the rest of the already paid for month to my last address and the forwarding address with the post office had likely expired.
Now at some point in the next few weeks or months I will be getting a check from the state. It's not a small fortune, but I can definitely buy some diapers or groceries with it.
To see if you have unclaimed property, or money, go to the South Dakota Treasurer's website and type in your name.
