SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A bystander of the Boston Marathon bombing who had part of her leg amputated as a result of the attacks has shared her journey of recovery and resilience with a group of health care professionals and others in Sioux Falls.

Heather Abbott explained how she became an advocate for people with disabilities during an event Wednesday meant to raise awareness about the rights afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws.

Abbott talked about her fears of having her leg amputated below the knee, the support she received and her decision to help other amputees through a foundation.

Abbott says she often hears from other amputees who are no longer work and wonders if their former employers tried to make reasonable accommodations to keep them.
