Voters to Decide Fate of Proposed $8M Library in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Aberdeen residents will get a chance to vote on a proposed $8 million public library.

The American News reports that a petition drive collected more than 1,500 signatures, and only 783 were needed to force an election on the project the City Council approved about three weeks ago.

The financing plan for the library includes $5.9 million in city funds and $2.1 million from the Alexander Mitchell Public Library Foundation. Some people question the cost.

Library Board Vice President Tom Guhin says a quality library is "a necessary part of the community."

The election was not immediately scheduled.
