YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A group of citizens and officials in Yankton County this week is starting the process of devising a long-term solution to funding road and bridge upkeep.

The task force was formed after voters last fall resoundingly defeated a proposed property tax increase to help fund road and bridge repairs. County commissioners had adopted the levy but opponents referred it to a public vote through a petition drive.

County Commissioner and task force member Don Kettering tells the Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan that the group hopes to find a broad solution, rather than focusing on specific roads or problems.

The nine-member group hopes to have a proposal to send to the County Commission this summer.
