What’s Happening At Huset’s Speedway Memorial Day Weekend? Two Shows!
Memorial Day weekend is the big kick-off of summer in so many ways. And auto racing is one of the biggest things lingering over this special holiday.
From the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 to all the short tracks across the nation, racing goes into big action.
Huset's Speedway outside of Brandon, South Dakota is one of them. The famed high bank oval is holding events both Sunday and Monday evenings.
The top class of race cars, the outlaw sprints, will run on Sunday. These cars utilize 410 cubic inch engines that produce 800 to 900 horsepower. At the last event at Huset's drivers from 3 different countries were thundering out 10 second laps.
The next class of sprint cars, are the championship sprints. They use motors that are limited to 360 cubic inches. They produce around 750 horsepower. The cars themselves, are exactly like the outlaw sprints. Just a few less cubes.
The 360's will run both nights. And they are involved in a special race both nights. A special $10,000 point fund is up for grabs over the weekend in honor of former great car owner Lorin Barstad, who passed away a few years back. This will be the 4th annual running of his memorial. It's a 3 night event this year that starts on Saturday night at I-90 Speedway in Hartford and concludes Sunday and Monday at Huset's.
If I were a betting man, I would lay money down that a number of the 410 class drivers will put their 360 motors in their cars and run in this. Most of the 410 guys have 360's ready to go. Changing power plants for these boys is like you and me changing a tire.
Plus the micro sprints are in action both nights. These smaller scale sprint cars run 600cc motorcycle engines. They put on a show screaming at over 10,000 RPMs. By the sound, you would think you were at Indy.
Stock cars and B-Mods also on hand. Both running both nights.
Sunday starts at 7PM and Monday starts at 6PM.
