RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Motorcyclists from at least eight states will ride 850 miles of mostly dirt and gravel roads in western South Dakota next week. Organizers hope the event will draw thousands of off-road adventure bikers to the area over the next few years.

About two dozen riders will start in Rockerville on Tuesday and finish there Friday after traveling in a loop through the Black Hills and the Cave Hills of Harding County.

The Associated Press reports that Bill Hearne of Rapid City came up with the Dakota Adventure Loop ride as a way to show off western South Dakota to adventure motorcycle riders, who ride far off paved roads. He hopes to establish the area as a destination for adventure riders from around the world.
