On Wednesday (April 19) engineers took down the former KTTW radio tower in Sioux Falls in a controlled demolition.

The tower, which stood on land at the corner of 69th Street and Louise Avenue, was removed to make way for a new $175 million medical complex for Avera Health. According to the Argus Leader newspaper, the complex "will be the largest building project in Sioux Falls history."

The Avera on Louise Health Campus will be a walk-able, consumer-friendly campus on 82 acres, said Dr. Dave Kapaska, Avera’s regional president and CEO. Besides orthopedics, the campus will focus on sports medicine, gastroenterology, rheumatology and internal medicine.

The tower itself was built back in the 1960's for KRRO Radio and was originally 200 feet tall, according to Mike Langford, Chief Engineer for Results Radio/Townsquare Media. It was later purchased by KTTW-TV, the Fox affiliate and an additional 200 feet were added to the tower.  In recent years it has been used by several cellular companies.
