USDA: Cool Temps Slow Spring Tillage, Small Grain Seeding
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says South Dakota received little precipitation over the past week, but cool temperatures slowed spring tillage and small grain seeding.
The USDA's Agricultural Statistics Service says the winter wheat crop is rated 1 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 59 percent good and 5 percent excellent. Twenty-nine percent of the spring wheat crop is planted, behind last year's 36 percent but ahead of the five-year average of 22 percent.
Oats planted is at 31 percent, near last year's 34 percent but ahead of the 24 percent average. About 3 percent of that crop has emerged.
Cattle and calf conditions are rated 15 percent fair, 77 percent good and 8 percent excellent. Calving is 53 percent complete, on par with last year and the five-year average.
