Summit League Men: South Dakota Comes Up Short at Omaha

Trevor Gruis, University of South Dakota Coyotes
University of South Dakota

The South Dakota men’s basketball team came within a one made three pointer of pulling off a road win at Omaha Saturday afternoon, but the shot, and the Coyotes comeback failed to connect, as UNO won 77-73, extending USD’s losing streak to two.

With the Mavericks up 75-73 with :21.2 remaining, Justin Simmons missed the front end of a 1-and-1, giving South Dakota the basketball, and a chance to take the lead with a three-pointer.  The Coyotes got an open look from Adam Thoesby behind the arc in the right corner with :05.4 left, but the shot didn’t go and Omaha tacked on a pair of free throws to win by four.

Tyler Larson was making his first career start for USD, in place of the injured Trey Norris, got the Coyotes out of the gate in a hurry, scoring nine of the team’s first 14 points as South Dakota led by as many as 10 in the first half.  Larson finished the half 4-of-5 from the floor with 11 points.

The Coyotes played a strong game defensively in the first half, holding Omaha to 33% shooting, as Tyler Flack controlled the paint with three blocked shots.

USD up 32-27 at intermission.

In the second half, Omaha started having success penetrating the basketball, and kicking it outside where CJ Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Mavericks the lead with 14:18 left. Carter finished with 18 points, Simmons added 18, while Marcus Tyus scored 10 of his 12 in the second half.  UNO shot 59% in the second half.

Trevor Gruis led USD with 16 points, two nights after being held to five at Western Illinois.  Brandon Bos had 12 of his 14 in the second half, Larson finished with 13, Thoesby with 11.

South Dakota was just 3-of-15 from behind the 3-point line.

The Coyotes (8-11/3-2) host North Dakota State next Thursday and South Dakota State next Saturday.
