‘Splinter Cell’ Circles Doug Liman and a 2015 Release

We haven’t heard much about New Regency and Ubisoft’s planned big screen version of ‘Splinter Cell‘ since a bidding war broke out to get the film rights and Tom Hardy signed on to play the lead back in 2012. But now the film looks like it might have a director in Doug Liman and an August start date.

This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, and they say that Liman is in final talks to take on the project. Liman broke though by directing ‘Swingers’ back in 1996, and then reinvented himself as an action director after the success of 2002′s ‘The Bourne Identity.’ His last couple movies haven’t hit the way they were supposed to (2008′s ‘Jumper,’ 2010′s forgotten Valerie Plame film ‘Fair Game’) though he’s got the Tom Cruise-led ‘Edge of Tomorrow‘ coming out in June, and has been attached to helm ‘Everest,’ a biopic about George Mallory possibly starring Benedict Cumberbatch — but considering the speed to which this ‘Splinter Cell’ film is coming together, it’s likely that project has or will fall by the wayside.

They have a script (by Eric Singer, who worked on ‘American Hustle‘), and the good news is that Summer 2015 — which once looked a little scary when it seemingly housed The Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ ‘Batman Vs. Superman‘ and ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ — is no longer overcrowded with megablockbusters.
