Spearfish Budget Holds Line on Property Taxes

SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — Property taxes in Spearfish will remain about the same under the city's proposed $30.8 million budget for 2014.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that half of the city's budget comes from sales tax, so Spearfish continues to have one of the lowest levies in South Dakota.

The budget is an increase of nearly 20 percent from 2013, but the amount of revenue the city expects to bring in has increased by 25 percent. A city ordinance also directs the city to have adequate cash reserves.

City officials voted to remove salary increases for the mayor and council members, but city staff will get a 3 percent raise.

The proposal, which comes after nearly a month of budget workshops, will be up for vote Sept. 16.
