SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — People who oppose the city of Spearfish's decision to annex land in Spearfish Valley have submitted petitions hoping to force a public vote on the matter.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the Concerned Citizens of Spearfish Valley need only about 300 valid signatures. Group spokesman Jim Lee says more than 1,000 signatures were submitted.

If there are enough valid ones, a public vote will be held next month.

Spearfish Valley residents who oppose annexation say they didn't ask for city services and don't need them. City officials say residents in city limits pay to provide police, fire and ambulance services in the area when Lawrence County officials can't respond.
