South Dakota State only lost two Summit League games in 2013, both to the Jaguars of IUPUI.  So when those two met to tipoff the 2014 Summit League schedule Thursday night in Brookings, the Jacks were looking to settle a score.

In the end, SDSU extracted their revenge – barely – blowing a 12-point second half lead, only to rally for a 63-57 win at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits used defense, depth, and balance in the first half to grab a nine point lead at intermission.

After falling behind by four early, SDSU grabbed the lead for the first time at 11-10 on a Mariah Clarin tip in with 11:45 left.  That started a 14-6 Jacks run, pushing the lead to seven moments later, as the defense held the Jags scoreless for nearly 11 minutes, limiting IUPUI to just 22% shooting in the first half.

The South Dakota State reserves played a big role in the first 20 minutes, outscoring the entire IUPUI team 24-23 in the first half.

In all, eight different Jacks players scored in the first half, led by Tara Heiser and Clarissa Ober who each had six points, as SDSU lead at the break 32-23.

In the second half, IUPUI used full court pressure to rattle the Jacks who went ice cold from the field, hitting just four of their first 12 shots.  In the meantime, the Jags took advantage, outscoring SDSU 17-6, tying the game at 40 with 8:57 left.

Down 44-43 with 6:47 left, the Jacks made their move and re-took the lead on a Hannah Strop 3-pointer.

Ober then turned up the heat on defense, grabbing a pair of steals, and SDSU strung together a 10-0 run to push the lead to 52-44 with 3:52 left.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, South Dakota State just 39%, IUPUI 33%.  And even though the Jacks only shot 67% from the free throw line and were outscored 20-14 at the charity stripe, SDSU did make their free throws down the stretch, ending a three game skid.

In all, 10 different South Dakota State players scored on the night, Heiser the only one in double figures with 11 points.  Strop did grab eight rebounds to lead the Jacks.

DeArria Goss had 21 points in a losing effort for IUPUI.

SDSU (10-7/1-0) hosts Fort Wayne Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm.
