Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says an 87-year-old woman got a phone call from someone claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House telling her she won $2 million.

"But, they needed her to send $15,000 for some unknown reason. Unfortunately, she ended up sending $900," explained Clemens.

"The scammer called back and said they needed more money. She was in the process of sending the money to them. When a relative got wind of this they ended up putting a stop to it."

Clemens says the scam is not new to the area.

"We have seen this from time to time. People pop up and say they've won a lot of money, but more is needed for some fees and taxes. We don't see as much of this going on as we had before. People need to do some checking before sending money. If you're winning money, you shouldn't have to send anything before getting the payment."

Clemens says if it sounds to good to be true, you could be a victim of a scam.
