A Sioux Falls man fell victim to a phone scam that cost him hundreds of dollars. Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens explains.

"This was a man that received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office. The scammer told the victim there was a warrant for him and then said he needed to get some Green Dot cards as a form of payment. Unfortunately, the victim got $500 worth of Green Dot cards and he gave the numbers to this scammer. After that the victim called the sheriff. He found out the person the scammer to be didn't exist."

If you receive a call like this, Clemens says don't send money!

"If you get a call from anyone claiming to be law enforcement and they request payment from a credit card,an I Tunes card or something similar that should be a clue this could be a scam."

Clemens also urges you not to give out any personal information to the caller.
