SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A spokesman for a group that helps assist Sioux Falls residents with low-income housing says there aren't enough affordable rentals in South Dakota's largest city.

The number of affordable apartments in Minnehaha County has slowly increased, but not enough to keep up with the steady growth of households that qualify under federal guidelines as "extremely low income."

Federal figures show that the city has enough affordable housing to meet a little more than a third of the need, and the gap is growing.

Jim Wiederrich is a member of Sioux Falls Housing Redevelopment Commission. He says the group plans to look at creating partnerships between government and the business community to provide housing.
