School Officials Say Wrestlers’ Dance was Insensitive

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Administrators at a Rapid City high school say they don't anticipate the wrestling team will face heavy discipline for imitating a traditional dance to American Indian music that was recently posted to social media by a student.

Officials at Central High School say the wrestlers' dancing is culturally insensitive and doesn't fit with school values. Indian education manager Sarah Pierce says the dance could be perceived as a mockery by American Indians.

Assistant District Superintendent Matthew Seebaum says they will use the incident as a teaching tool to help the wrestlers' understand their actions were insensitive.

KOTA-TV says the video was posted to Facebook by junior Katie Johnson, who is American Indian. Johnson says what the wrestlers did "wasn't right in any way" and she didn't want their actions to "just get blown over."
