PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Board of Regents is going to develop regulations governing beer and wine sales for special events at public universities after lawmakers approved the sales during the 2016 legislative session.

Executive director and CEO of the board, Mike Rush, says the policy will be in place before July 1.

Supporters say the changes are very narrow. The law specifies that beer and wine sales would be limited to special events involving sports, performing arts and fundraising, among other occasions.

State law didn't ban serving alcohol, but on-campus sales were prohibited.

The city of Brookings, home to South Dakota State University, was a key booster of the plan. City Manager Jeff Weldon says the sales would be "advantageous" for the university and provide a "community-wide benefit."
