Preventing Sioux Falls Home Fires

Tony Burke, Director of the Red Cross of South Dakota, and Sioux Falls Fire Marshall Dean Lanier have announced a major project in Sioux Falls.

According to Tony and Dean, the city of Sioux Falls and the Red Cross will converge on the Whitter Park neighborhood November 23rd to install free smoke detectors.  Aside from the alarms, they will also train residents on fire safety.

Tony says almost two-thirds of those killed in Sioux Falls had no working smoke alarms and only a third of them have developed a fire evacuation plan.

Dean says the reason the Whitter neighborhood has been selected for the project because it has been the location of some of the worst recent fires in Sioux Falls.

In the last 18 months, nine people died citywide in fires without smoke alarms.

If you’d like to volunteer for the project, call 605-336-2488.
