RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Rapid City police say they're investigating the city's sixth homicide of the year.

Officers arrived at of 1st and North streets about 9 p.m. Wednesday and found a man who had been assaulted with a baseball bat lying in the street. Medical crews rushed the man to a local hospital but he died from the injuries.

Police identified the victim as 49-year-old Charles Quiver of Rapid City.

Witnesses tell officers that two men were seen running northeast from the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

Chief of Police Karl Jegeris says that Rapid City has had 14 homicides in the past three years, and the victim has been a Native American in all but one. He called on local community leaders to address the ongoing problem of disproportionate minority victimization.
