Tis the season for scammers and a series of phone scams are prevalent once again, in the Sioux Empire.

This time phone scammers are posing as representatives of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office. KDLT TV is reporting the callers tell the person on the line they have an outstanding warrant and need to take care of it right away. The scammer then claims if you fail to take care of the problem immediately you will be arrested.

According to Captain Jason Gearman of the Sioux Falls Police Department, the scammers can be quite aggressive with their tactics.

There have also been reports of additional scams that claim the caller told them they had jury duty or a relative in jail. In both cases, the scammers generally want people to Western Union money or purchase iTunes or gift cards.

Authorities remind the public not to give such callers financial or personal information.

Often times these calls will appear with a (605) area code but actually originate from outside the U.S. Another big problem, it's  almost impossible to trace the origin of these calls or recoup a monetary loss.

If you feel like you've been a victim of a scam, you're asked to contact Sioux Falls Police Department. Should you ever wonder if you have an outstanding warrant, you can always contact the Sheriff’s Office directly or go to gotwarrants.org.
