No Urban Deer Hunt in Pierre This Year Due to Low Numbers

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota's capital city will not have an urban deer hunt this year.

Pierre's City Commission voted Tuesday night to accept the recommendation of the city's Deer Management Task Force that culling deer won't be necessary due to low numbers of the animals.

City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says deer used to be a tremendous nuisance in Pierre. In 2007 there were more than 120 of them counted. But the 2011 Missouri River flood displaced them and greatly reduced their numbers.

A survey last month counted fewer than 70, with most of them near the edge of the city.

Urban deer hunts have been done in Pierre since 2007, with the exception of 2011 and last year.
