HURON, S.D. (AP) — A Minnesota man charged in the slaying of a man in eastern South Dakota has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

KOKK radio reports that 32-year-old Jose Vega, of Montevideo, Minnesota, appeared in court on Tuesday. His trial was scheduled to begin Aug. 24.

Vega is accused in the May 31 beating death of 49-year-old Keith Houck in his rural Cavour home.

A second suspect, 50-year-old Kevin Krueger, of Beadle County, also appeared in court Tuesday, but his arraignment on a murder charge was continued for two weeks.
