RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A memorial sign honoring the people who built Mount Rushmore is back in place along a South Dakota highway.

The marker that designated a 10-mile segment of Highway 244 as the Gutzon Borglum Memorial Highway has been missing for decades after it was removed during a road construction project.

Nearly 3 million people a year visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which was sculpted by Borglum and completed in 1941.

The sign was re-dedicated this past weekend at a ceremony attended by Borglum's grandson, Jim Borglum, and the only living Mount Rushmore worker, 91-year-old Nick Clifford.

Jim Borglum tells the Rapid City Journal that his father, who also worked on the memorial, would have laughed about the story of the missing sign.
