Tammy Wynette was a Country Music Star before she released 'Stand By Your Man'.

She had number one hit's, like 'I Don't Want To Play House' and 'D-I-V-O-R-C-E', plus a huge hit with 'You Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad'.

But then 'Stand By Your Man' happened.  The year was 1968.

It became not only Tammy's biggest hit ever, it's also one of the most covered songs in the history of country music.  Who else has recorded the song?  Well, such diverse artist's as Patti Page, Loretta Lynn (on a 1969 album), The Blues brothers, David Alan Coe, Lyle Lovett and Elton John.

Legend has it that Producer Billy Sherrill and Tammy co-wrote the song in 15 minutes and initially Tammy didn't care for it much.  But the song became Tammy's signature hit, and in late November, 1968 it replaced Marty Robbins 'I Walk Alone' at the top of the country chart and stayed at #1 for three straight weeks.  Oh, and it also was a Top Twenty Pop hit as well!

Can you imagine a Tammy Wynette concert with her singing 'Stand By Your Man'?  Me either.
