You may have noticed a growing number of women - young women in particular - speaking in a creaky voice.  Think of women like Britney Spears or Kim Kardashian, if you've ever heard them talk.

It's called "vocal fry", or "creaky voice", and researchers say women who imitate that style of speaking may be hurting their chances in the job market.

Researchers at Duke University, published in the journal "PLOS ONE," say this raspy phenomenon makes women less professionally desirable and less likely to be hired.

Compared to a "normal" speaking voice, female voices exhibiting vocal fry are perceived as less competent, less educated, less trustworthy, less attractive, and less hirable.
