It’s Finally Over. The Minnesota Vikings and Chris Kluwe Reach Settlement
The terms of the actual settlement are not released by the Minnesota Vikings, or by Chris Kluwe, but the two sides have finally come to an agreement.
Kluwe released a Deadspin article in January claiming that his release from the Vikings was due to him being outspoken on political issues, and not over his performance. On top of that, Kluwe took shots at former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier and Vikings special team coach Mike Priefer. Priefer was suspended for the first three games of the season due to homophobic slurs.
After months of back-and-forth between the two sides, an agreement has been reached. In a press release from the Vikings, Zygi Wilf, Mark Wilf, and Kluwe released statements.
“We appreciate Chris Kluwe’s contributions to the Minnesota Vikings as a player and a member of this organization during his eight seasons in which he established many team records as our punter, and we wish him and his family the best in the future…In regards to this matter, our focus remains on maintaining a culture of tolerance, inclusion and respect, and creating the best workplace environment for our players, coaches and staff.” – Zygi Wilf
“As a family we have long-supported equal rights causes, including marriage equality…We are glad a resolution of this matter has been reached, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to create positive awareness of these issues.” – Mark Wilf
““I’m pleased that the issue has been resolved…I intend to continue to speak out on behalf of marriage equality, and I am pleased to be a part of the impact the Vikings material charitable contributions will have on LGBT and related causes.” – Chris Kluwe
The Vikings charitable contributions that Kluwe is referencing includes financial support for human rights and anti-hate causes according to the release. The Vikings also say that they will continue to enforce their zero-tolerance policy in the club code of conduct.
The resolution comes just a couple of weeks before the start of the regular season. For more information, see the Vikings press release.
