April 13, 2015 has been proclaimed National Plant Appreciation Day. It's that wonderful time of the year when folks start bringing the planters and potting soil out of the garage and start to color up the outside of their house.

I've always admired those who can keep their flowers looking nice through Summer. It seems like whenever I plant flowers in the front of the house, about halfway through the growing season I'm left with nothing but a few straggly stems.

I blame it on not really knowing the difference between a real flower and a weed flower. Grandpa used to always say, "If it comes out of the ground easily, it was probably a valuable plant." Plus, I have a tendency to over water.

And then there's the boredom factor that usually sets in. At the beginning of the season, I have the best of intentions, but then eventually I get sidetracked by something else - like golf, motorcycling, a squirrel. My attention span is not what it used to be.

But, thank goodness for plastic plants! Come about July is when I usually make a run to my nearest (locally owned) nursery and buy up what's left of their fake flowers. Hey, don't laugh! Have you seen how real the plastic plants look these days? It's amazing!

You know, now that I think about it, maybe I should just buy the fake fabric plants right off the bat this year. That way I won't have to buy potting soil, fertilizer, new flower pots - Geez, I am SO LAZY!!!
